SSB AND RAJAH BUAYAN COCO GROWERS ARE HIGHLY MOTIVATED

The coconut growers of the Municipalities of Sultan Sa Barongis and Rajah Buayan, all in the Province of Maguindanao, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao are highly motivated by the presence of coconut seedlings distributed by the Alliance of Bangsamoro for Peace and Sustainable Development, Incorporated as part of its program on "Ligawasan Coconut Development Program". The activity is a part of the ABPSD engagement with the Coconut Industry Investment Fund (CIIF) under its program on "Coco Farm Development Program". Hundreds of hectares of lands can be planted by coconut growers from the above mentioned municipalities, considering that more than fifty thousand (50,000+) are available in the ABPSD - Rajah Buayan District Coco Nursery. Initially, at around twenty thousand (20,000) seedlings are already distributed for more than a month period, hence the coco growers commented that "Madtiaba pan i dili kapamula na tao sa niyog, ka niya den sa padsudan" - means It is impossible not to plant coconut, seedlings are already in the backyard".

Two farmers mentioned and relayed that one time when they decided to plant coco seedlings, they went to Dalican, Dinaig (now Datu Odin Sinsuat), Maguindanao just to procure seedlings . He further mentioned "Imagine we sacrificed for not in-taking foods for almost the whole day, just to obtain some number of coco seedling, and now it is already in our backyard, freely provided to us and impossible for us not to plant". He added, once we could not plant coconut that it already in our hands, it means we have sickness. We mean, from the present activity in the locality, they are highly motivated.

The significant things that the activity have an impact to the communities is the rehabilitation of the areas that were traversed by the inundations of the ALA River for the past decade. If you can remember, what had happened to almost all barangays in the present Municipality of Rajah Buayan, that thousands of hectares of lands were totally destroyed by the ALA River floods. By the implementation of the ABPSD project under its program on "Liguasan Coconut Development Program", the communities are economically being rehabilitated and open the eyes and minds of the stakeholders for development activities in the area, and if possible the local government units of the locality can adopt programs and activities for the economic development of their constituents.

Further, the planting activities on coconut open the minds of the residents / coconut growers for the importance of being organized, because one of the requirements to be provided with seedlings is being a member of a certain community-based organization in the locality.

It is expected that the started activity for economic development of barangays in Muncipalities of Sultan Sa Barongis and Rajah Buayan in Maguindanao Province will serve as venue to start adopting development in agriculture and entrepreneurship in the area. Hopefully, the municipal government of the above-mentioned municipalities will lead the adoption of a program. From these, the Alliance of Bangsamoro for Peace and Sustainable Development, Incorporated shall continue supporting the like activities, as it is done in other municipalities covered by other ABPSD districts.
